Mulberry chutney is an adaptable relish that brings a mix of tangy flavors to various dishes. Crafted with mulberries, fragrant spices, and a touch of sweetness, this chutney is simple to make and ideal for capturing the essence of the mulberry harvest. Whether paired with grilled meats, cheeses, or used as a sandwich topping, this homemade mulberry chutney will surely enhance your dining experience with its taste and luxurious consistency.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups fresh mulberries, washed and stemmed
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Mulberries: Wash the mulberries under cold water and remove the stems.

  2. Saute Onions and Garlic: In a large saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, and sauté until they turn translucent, about 3-4 minutes.

  3. Cook Mulberries: Add the mulberries to the saucepan and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until they start to break down and release their juices.

  4. Add Remaining Ingredients: Stir in the brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, ground ginger, mustard seeds, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using).

  5. Simmer: Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Let the chutney simmer gently for about 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to your desired consistency.

  6. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the chutney and adjust the seasoning according to your preference. You can add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter, or more vinegar for a tangier taste.

  7. Cool and Store: Once the chutney has thickened, remove it from the heat and let it cool to room temperature. Transfer it to clean, sterilized jars and seal tightly. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
